Practitioner Bio
John Gilbert, MS, RD, RHC-III, ACSM-CEP
John graduated his training of MI training in Krakow, Poland to become a member of the international MI Network of Trainers (MINT). His passion for finding the most credible, evidence-based, efficient & effective approaches for helping people led him to Motivational Interviewing, particularly due to its best-practice status. Through an opportunity of mentorship, John focused his efforts on becoming specialized in MI, with the recognition of it being so widely applicable at helping so many people with so many issues—reaching far beyond helping others via his training as a healthcare practitioner.
John’s background includes a B.Sc. in Exercise Physiology & Metabolism, Master's in Human Nutrition, the highest level certificate of training in Adult Weight Management through the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR), and the highest level proficiency with Motivational Interviewing (MI) in Healthcare as a Registered Health Coach Expert (RHC-III). His credentials include: American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) - Clinical Exercise Physiologist®, ACSM - Exercise is Medicine ® Level II Practitioner, Health Sciences Institute - Chronic Care Professional, and an Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics - Registered Dietitian. His volunteer work currently includes contributing to the American College of Lifestyle (ACLM) Nutrition Registered Dietitian Working Group (currently contributing to dietary position paper), CDR Weight Management Committee, MINT Professional Development committee (amending current fidelity feedback tool of the MI certified trainer process for ensuring a quality assurance and improvement process for MI trainers globally). All such volunteer efforts continue to keep him updated on current events and trends in healthcare and other professions, while contributing and evolving his expertise in the pragmatic embodiment of practitioners' intentions that affect outcomes.
John's utilized MI in clinics, nursing homes, hospitals, social work settings, and has been providing many MI trainings to many organizations throughout the country as his full-time career, starting with his immersion into MI more than a decade ago. He has also provided multiple trainings for organizations that are looking to operationalize culture change from an evidence-based and values-driven foundation that’s measureable for quality assurance and improvement with MI fidelity tools, such as the one he co-authored that is being used internationally, known as the Motivational Interviewing Competency Assessment (MICA). John remains loyal to his training and mentoring from Casey Jackson as a trainer, coder, coach, and consultant at the Institute for Individual & Organizational Change (IFIOC). With these efforts, John continues to receive testimonials that the MI Training or coaching he facilitates, or the training he provides with the MICA tool and IFIOC approach of addressing the “physics of behavior change communication,” is a helpful and unique approach and perspective with MI, especially in such a saturated market of MI training where many people are already familiar with MI and/or think they do it already. Lastly, be it training healthcare, or social work, behavioral health, or corrections professionals, John continues to focus on the evidence of MI and psychological behavior change principles, incorporating it all into training, organizational culture change, and helping people further align their behavior with their values towards living into their sense of happier and healthier.
