Acupuncture (the insertion of very fine needles to promote the flow of energy within the body) is a balancing technique purported to restore the body to optimal health. The classical Chinese explanation is that channels of energy run in regular patterns through the body and over its surface. These channels, called meridians, are like rivers flowing through the body to irrigate and nourish the tissues, blood flow and nervous pulses also follow meridians to run through the body to various parts, structures and organs. An obstruction in the movement of these energy rivers are like a dam that backs up the flow in one part of the body and restricts it in others. Any obstruction and blockages or deficiencies of energy, blood and nervous pulses would eventually lead to disease. Needling the acupuncture points can influence the meridians: the acupuncture needles unblock the obstruction at the dams, and reestablish the regular flow through the meridians. Acupuncture treatments can therefore help the body's internal organs to correct imbalances in their digestion, absorption, and energy production activities, and in the circulation of their energy through the meridians. According to the needling methods, acupuncture can be divided into traditional acupuncture, ear acupuncture, electro-acupuncture, scalp acupuncture and hand acupuncture etc. Over the last few decades, traditional acupuncture was widely used combining with other techniques, like moxi-needling, cup-needling etc, to increase the therapeutic effects. Modern science explain the functions of acupuncture as following: Needling the acupuncture points stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These chemicals will either change the experience of pain, or they will trigger the release of other chemicals and hormones, which influence the body's own internal regulating system. Acupuncture has been used by Chinese people for thousands of year, and it becomes more and more popular in the Western societies. Here is the BBC documentary film about the acupuncture.

Equine Facilitated CounsellingEquine Facilitated Counsselling is an experiential psychotherapy that is facilitated by a (qualified) mental health professional with horse experience (EFMHA, 2003). At Shamrock, we combine our formal education as mental health professionals, science, and research to provide a therapeutic basis for adding horses and nature to our therapeutic work.Horses are masters of non-verbal communication. They teach us about trust, respect, and boundaries, which we bridge to our clients' lives off of the farm. When people are met with the non-judgmental and forgiving eyes of a horse, it helps create an emotionally safe environment where it is easier to invite desired change and accept help.In many ways, our equine facilitated counselling provides everything that traditional clinical counselling (see below) does, with the addition of a horse,Traditional Clinical CounsellingTraditional counselling is typically thought of as “talk therapy”, with the addition of play and expressive therapies as appropriate. We use a variety of therapeutic approaches, including narrative and cognitive behavior therapy. It is our belief that each client’s needs are unique, and the work that we do in very dependent on the needs of the people we work with. Although we have an entire horse farm to make use of, we also have inviting therapy rooms for those who prefer to be inside.Specializations:ChildrenTeensAdultsCouplesFamilyAnxiety & DepressionTrauma & PTSD RelationshipLife StrugglesGrief & Loss Addictions

Welcome to Truest ReflectionsA reflection of Barbara Hunter:Having moved to the Okanagan in 2009, Barbara Hunter brought her family from Alberta to experience more opportunity and to start a new life.2009 presented a hard transition as a married parent of two children to a single parent.  Addictions played a big part in this transition.  From this point, Barbara then went through more addictions and mental health experiences within her family.  This was the hardest place that Barbara had ever been.At the age of 43, Barbara (aka Barb) acknowledged that she had been through many obstacles, jumped through many hoops and over high fences in her life. She realized that she had a lot of compassion for others who experienced their own obstacles, struggles and pain.Mental health and addictions, although very exhausting, frustrating and challenging, Barbara chose to take all that she went through, all that she experienced and put it together with education so that she could help others. From here, Barb pursued Counselling as her new career.  Still working full time, parenting and volunteering Barb strived to put her life experience into perspective and combine all that she had experienced with an academic flavor so she could better assist those experiencing life as she had.  She saw gaps in the system of addictions and wanted to create more opportunities for healing.Reflection of Barbara as the Counsellor:Barb’s biggest desire is to be present, mindful and to listen intentionally.  In these moments she finds how to connect with others and lead by simply reflecting what she sees in them.  She believes we all have the answers but are we being asked the right questions?  All it takes is a little observation, listening, bold questions and trust.Barb’s greatest belief is that our healing process requires acknowledging what is holding us back, trusting what we feel, letting go of the excess that no longer serves us and taking a leap of faith.  As Carl Jung expressed – “Diving not Drowning”.By walking the path together with Barb she will simply be the voice that guides you, listens and lets you know you are not alone.  Progression towards healing is slow, but the journey can be everything. What is it that you can do to fully be you?  What better day to find out than today.  Your Truest Reflection awaits you.
