Overcoming Life's Obstacles: The goals of this session are to give people tools to help them overcome some of life’s obstacles they will face, and to find motivation to make the change. At the end of this session, participants will have a better understanding of the impact that negative influences can have, and how to eliminate the negative, focus on positive and make changes in their lives.
Building Inclusive Communities: The major objective of this session is to engage people and develop a better understanding of the barriers that people face in life, and the importance of Inclusive Communities. This session will give participants tools to use when advocating for people. By having people collectively promoting inclusiveness in their professional and personal lives, it will also promote inclusive communities.
Employment Skills: The Growing Employment Skills and Training (G.E.S.T.) program was created to help people who are struggling with employment. This program is designed to give people tools to assist with their job search and teach them how to stand out from other applicants. For people who would like to start their own business, the G.E.S.T program can help. From deciding what business you would like to start, to developing a business plan, these topics will help get you started.
Practitioner Bio
I grew up on in a small community, working on local farms, and thinking I had the typical happy childhood. Little did I know there was nothing typical about it. At the age of 16 I left home and traveled around Canada, working where I could to support myself. Struggling through my late teens and early 20's, dealing with many personal issues, I moved around throughout Ontario working in retail, restaurants, sales, factories and warehouses. These were dark times for me as the personal issues I was dealing with held me back from achieving any sort of success in my life. I could see that many of the obstacles I had to overcome were put there by myself, but I still blamed other people and couldn't find a way out of the darkness.
After the death of my father, who was my best friend, and birth of my first child, I decided to change my life and try to make a difference in other people's lives. I became a volunteer firefighter, which I continued for 6 years. After receiving my high school diploma in my late 20's, I went to college and received my Social Service Worker Diploma. During college, I started my career working with people with intellectual disabilities. In this field, I have worked with people in the areas of transitioning to life after high school, competitive employment, life skills, program development, career development and coaching.
It wasn't until later in life when I started helping people that I realized the extent of the abuse I went through and how much I struggled as a young adult. Now I use my experience to help others, and show people that there is hope. There are ways to take control of your life and make changes. I have held talks and facilitated workshops for college students, employees, and families of people with intellectual disabilities. I believe that there are always options in life, sometimes you just have to look at the situation in a different way. I also don't believe in "thinking outside the box", I prefer to remove the box as I believe the box is a barrier to people.
My experience living in different parts of the country, and working in many fields helps me to understand different communities and work environments. My goal is to use this information, and my experience and try to make a difference by building inclusive communities.
